The transfer market has not been the same since PSG sent their lawyers to LaLiga's offices to pay Neymar's whopping release clause in order to lure him away from FC Barcelona in 2017.
The Catalan giants did not expect anyone to be able to afford that kind of money for one of their prized assets, and have since increased their release clauses – obligatory in LaLiga contracts – in order to prevent a Neymar 2.0 from happening.
However, after inflation adjustment, Neymar's £199 million (R4 billion) fee would be shattered by Ronaldo Nazario's move from Barcelona to Inter Milan in 1997.
The Brazilian was just 21 years old when he joined the Italian giants for £25 million (R513 million) – the world transfer record at the time. In today's market, though, Ronaldo's transfer would be worth £380 million (R7.8 million), according to PlayRatings.
The Italian market analysts came up with an algorithm to determine modern-day transfer fees for previous top players, with Ronaldo trumping Diego Maradona.

The latter's move from Barca to Napoli in 1984 cost just £6 million (R123 million), which does not sound like much in today's market but would be worth a whopping £300 million (R6.2 billion) after the inflation adjustment – you can find the eight most expensive transfers of all time in the gallery above!
