Reports emerged on Friday evening that the midfielder agreed a three-year deal worth £140,000 a week with the Red Devils.
However, Bayern's Chief executive confirmed at a press conference that Schweinsteiger will leave the club.
"Bastian wants to do something new at the end of his career. He asked that we meet his wishes," Rummenigge said at the press conference.
"My colleagues at Manchester United have been in touch. We've reached an agreement over a transfer."
The 30-year-old spent 13 years with Bayern, winning numerous honours, which include eight Bundesliga titles, DFB-Pokal titles and one Champions League crown.
