A Netherlands international has admitted to being bitterly disappointed after his heated altercation with Lionel Messi on Friday night following their penalty shootout defeat to Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Aguero Reveals Messi's Heated Tunnel Row With Dutch Star
After coming off the bench in the second half as his nation trailed by two goals, Weghorst struck twice to send the match to extra-time before the Netherlands eventually lost on penalties.
Following his first goal, the out-on-loan Burnley forward caught Messi late with a tackle seconds after the restart, with tensions in the quarter-final encounter boiling over on a number of occasions during the tie and after the match had ended.
In his post-match interview, Messi was caught on film demanding an off-screen figure to go away, before it was later revealed to be Weghorst who received the stern telling off from the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner.
This later led to a heated altercation in the tunnel, with ex-Argentina international Sergio Aguero involved. Speaking after what had happened between himself and Messi, Weghorst said he was "disappointed" by the Albiceleste captain's behaviour.
"I went to shake his hand after the game," he told Gol.
"He has not accepted it and has said something rude to me, but I do not understand Spanish very well. I'm very disappointed."
