Throughout their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign, France have been hit hard by injuries, with the likes of Paul Pogba, N'Golo Kante and Christopher Nkunku all having been have ruled out of the tournament.
While the aforementioned players have all proved valuable contributors under Didier Deschamps' tenure, perhaps the injury that threatened the most to jeopardise France's chances of retaining their world title was that of Benzema.
The Lyon native was ruled out of the competition after tearing a muscle in his left thigh, and according to L'Equipe, Les Bleus have been better for it, winning their opening two matches with impressive performances.
However, according to his Real Madrid and national teammate Aurelien Tchouameni, the team has not necessarily profited from the loss of the 2022 Ballon d'Or winner to injury.
"The group is fine, we're all living well together, and I wanted to talk about something we saw about Karim Benzema's departure, about this information that we feel better since he's not here," he told reporters, as per the Daily Mail.
"This is totally false, because even when he was still with us, things were going well. We all felt sad about his injury.
