Another Dutch Star Responds To Van Gaal's Shock Messi Comments

Yet another Netherlands international has responded to Louis van Gaal's suggestion that the 2022 FIFA World Cup was rigged in order for Lionel Messi and Argentina to win it.

Earlier this week, Van Gaal claimed the World Cup outcome was "premeditated", basing this on some of the refereeing decisions made in the Netherlands' quarter-final exit to the eventual winners.

While captain Virgil van Dijk has already said he does not share the 72-year-old's opinion, striker Wout Weghorst has become the latest current Dutch international to address the topic.

The forward, who forced the game into extra-time following a second-half brace, has praised Van Gaal's outspoken approach.

"Then I thought: what a fantastic, honest, wonderful man," he said, according to ESPN

Pressed on whether he agrees with his former manager, Weghorst did not appear willing to reveal his thoughts on Van Gaal's controversial remarks.

"No, you're asking what I thought. That's what I thought. Whether he has a point… Or what my opinion is… I don't know," he continued.

"But I think it's wonderful that he says what he thinks, how he feels and how he experiences it. My opinion doesn't matter that much. If you ask me that, that's my first thought."

The ex-Manchester United man concluded the interview by stating that he would like to believe the matches were not fixed.

"I assume that football, FIFA and we as football fans… try to be the best at every tournament. That such things don't happen," he said when asked again for his opinion.
