The two sides, AS Roma and Feyenoord, came in to the second-leg level on aggregate, but the encounter got heated as an inflatable banana was hauled in the direction of Ivory Coast's African Cup of Nations winner.
The 32-year-old French referee, Clement Turpin, was forced to stop the game on more than one occasion, with the apparent act of racism being the first incident to kick-start a heated exchange between the teams.
In the 55th minute of the tie, the referee had to suspend the game's proceeding as the Dutch fans threw objects onto the field in frustration, and Mitchell te Vrede's dismissal after a robust challenge.
The game was full of drama, as Feyenoord's reserve goalkeeper was also shown red, following an incident on the sideline.
The former Arsenal man, Gervinho, then responded in the best possible fashion, by scoring the winner - earning Roma a spot in the Round of 16.
This comes just weeks after Chelsea fans were recorded yelling racial chants on a Paris train station, and not allowing a black man on the same train as them.
