Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League after losing 5-4 on penalties to Besiktas in their second leg clash on Thursday night.
Besiktas dictated play from the onset, although they failed to create any openings in the final third, much to the frustration of the home fans.
Liverpool had the first meaningful of the game in the 20th minute courtesy of a stinging effort from Raheem Sterling, which was palmed away by Gonen.
The Besiktas goalkeeper had to be at his best in the 32nd minute, as he got down well to keep out Daniel Sturridge's low effort.
The home side nearly stunned the English Premier League outfit just before the halftime break, as Olcay Sahan drove his way into the box before firing a powerful effort at goal, which was parried away by Simon Mignolet.
Besiktas grew stronger as the second half went on and they were rewarded for their dominance, as Tolgay Ali Arslan curled home a sublime effort from 20-yards out to give his side the lead.
Former Chelsea forward, Demba Ba, could have won it for Besiktas in stoppage time but the Senegalese forward struck the crossbar from three-yards out, which forced the game into extra time.
Mignolet proved to be Liverpool's hero in the extra-time, as he pulled off a couple fine saves to deny Ba and Gökhan Töre.
The game had to be decided via the penalty shoot-out, and it was Liverpool's Dejan Lovren who missed the final penalty to hand Besiktas the victory.
