Denmark Denied Winning Start At EUROS

Denmark were denied a perfect start in the 2024 UEFA European Championship after a 1-1 draw against Slovenia on Sunday evening.

EURO 2024

Result: Slovenia 1-1 Denmark

Date: 16 June 2024

Venue: Stuttgart Arena

Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand made two changes following their win over Norway in a friendly international, as Christian Eriksen and Jonas Wind were recalled to join Rasmus Hojlund in attack.

The Danes had a bright start after Eriksen fired them ahead on 17 minutes with a strike in the box after a flick on by Wind following a throw in.

Denmark continued to have the large part of possession, as they kept Slovenia from getting into the game.

The Dragons struggled to get out of their own half and Eriksen had a big chance to double the lead for the Danes just before the break after a good cut-back by Wind but his first-time shot in the box sailed over the crossbar and Hjulmand's charges went to the interval with only a narrow lead.

The game opened up from the break and ten minutes later Eriksen came close to doubling the lead for Denmark with a free-kick that took a nasty deflection in the Slovenia box and missed just wide.

The Danes gained courage and on 65 minutes Hojlund should have made it 2-0 after he received a square pass unmarked at the back post but his point-blank shot was crucially saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

However, Slovenia came to life on 73 minutes after Benjamin Sesko came close with a cracker from outside the box that came off the post.

As they remained on the front foot, Erik Janza eventually levelled matters for Matjaz Kek's troops moments later with a shot from the edge of the box that took a deflection and wrong-footed shot-stopper Kasper Schmeichel.

Both sides were going for the winner and with seven minutes remaining, Hjulmand rested Hojlund and brought on the fresh legs of Yussuf Poulsen upfront.

However, neither side could get chances in the tail end and they shared a point apiece in Group, that also has England and Serbia, who were in action an hour later.
