EURO 2024
Result: England 1-1 Switzerland
Date: 06 July 2024
Venue: Düsseldorf Arena
England made one change from the win over Slovenia as Ezri Konsa replaced the suspended Marc Guéhi, while the Swiss were unchanged from their triumph over defending champions Italy.
Switzerland came into the clash as slight favourites for the how they dispatched the reigning champions, while the English were yet to hit their strides after coming from behind in their last encounter.
The Three Lions, who were playing with three at the back, enjoyed a lot of the possession in the early stages first half, but the Swiss were well-marshalled at the back and did well to stifle any clear-cut chances.
That proved to be the trend for the remainder of the first half, as neither nation were able to carve out a serious opening at goal as both Jordan Pickford and Yann Sommer did not have a save to make.
The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, although it was the Swiss' turn to enjoy a bit more of the possession while Southgate's charges looked to attack on the counter.

Th Swiss would go on to take lead in the 72nd minute when Breel Embolo got ahead of Kyle Walker to turn home Ruben Vargas' low cross at the far post for his second goal of the campaign.
Southgate responded immediately by withdrawing Kobbie Mainoo, Konza and Keiran Trippier made way for Cole Palmer, Luke Shaw and Eberechi Eze.
England, however, weren't behind for too long as Bukayo Saka restored parity with ten minutes left on the clock with a lovely strike from the edge of the box that sailed in off the upright, which ultimately sent the game to extra-time.
Extra-time did not provide a lot of goal-mouth action, but Switzerland substitute Xherdan Shaqiri did go close to snatching a winner late on by trying his luck directly from a corner but his effort hit the upright.
The game went to a penalty shoot-out, where the Three Lions held their nerve to triumph 5-4 after Pickford saved Manuel Akanji's penalty.
