Lacklustre England Made To Wait For Last 16 Spot

Lacklustre England Made To Wait For Last 16 Spot

England missed the chance to book a spot in the 2024 UEFA European Championship round of 16 after a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday evening.

Result: Denmark 1-1 England

Date: 20 June 2024

Venue: Frankfurt Arena

England kept the same side that narrowly beat Serbia in their opening game, as Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham supported lone striker Harry Kane up top.

Denmark's Christian Eriksen became the joint most capper player with 132 appearances in the line-up, as he caught up with Simon Kjaer, who started on the bench.

After tense opening exchanges, Kane eventually brought the game to life on 18 minutes with the opener for the Three Lions after he had the easy task to convert a shot from close-range from a cross by Kyle Walker.

The Danes were spirited and ten minutes before the interval, Morten Hjulmand eventually levelled matters with a great strike from range, around 30 yards out, that gave goalkeeper Jordan Pickford no chance.

Kasper Hjulmand's charges gained confidence and gave England as much as they got but there were no clear-cut opportunities as the sides went to the break deadlocked.

England struggled to combine from the break and after ten minutes, Gareth Southgate had seen enough for the need of a change, as Conor Gallagher replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold to reinforce the attack in a tactical tweak.

The Three Lions immediately started to threaten as Foden almost gave them the lead with a strike that came off the post.

However, the Three Lions could not maintain momentum and with 20 minutes to go, Southgate did not hesitate to bring the fresh legs of Ollie Watkins, Eberechi Eze and Jarrod Bowen in attack.

It was anybody's game towards the end and with five minutes left, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg almost snatched all the three points for Denmark with a curling shot, unmarked in the box that missed narrowly wide.

Neither side had momentum in the tail end and they settled for a point apiece.

England remained at the top of Group C with four points, two points ahead of the Danes, who are third, with one last round-robin game left.
