In bombshell comments made by new Blues head coach Enzo Maresca on Wednesday, the Italian tactician confirmed that Sterling will play no part in his plans this season.
The 29-year-old, along with a number of his teammates, has been training away from Chelsea's first team in recent days after being left out of the side's opening Premier League match of the campaign.
Maresca said he has nothing more to say to the ex-Liverpool and Manchester City attacker, and that he simply prefers a different kind of winger.
With less than two weeks remaining of this window, the 82-time England international is expected to be on the hunt for a new club, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
It is reported that Sterling would prefer a permanent departure from Stamford Bridge as opposed to a loan, and that he has been given days off to find a solution.
After being dropped for Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday, his camp expressed their surprise at Maresca's decision in a statement given to the Daily Mail.
Sterling's representatives suggested there had been no indication he would not be continuing at the club following pre-season.

The winger still has three years remaining on his deal in London, although it is likely he has already played his last game for the Blues after contributing to 31 goals in 81 appearances.
