Haaland failed to score against Villa, making it three league games without a goal while he only has one goal in his last six match across all competitions.
The Norwegian striker was critical of his own performance after the game, but Guardiola disagreed with his top scorer's remarks.
"Without him, we would be even worse," Guardiola said, as per Sky Sports.
"I don't agree with him but I like players to feel this way it's the only chance that we have to get better.
"There are two options [to be self-critical], the other is to blame those by your side. That depends on them.
"We tried but in the end, he needs to be delivered the right balls in the right positions."
The Cityzens will back in action on Boxing Day when they tackle Everton at the Etihad Stadium.
