As the Premier League continues to embrace itself as the commercial giant it has become over the past decade, more often are we seeing well-established, high-profile players sent to the EFL Championship at the end of every campaign. This term, it seems impossible to imagine many of the stars who have been relegated staying in the England's second tier.
A couple of full England internationals have found themselves headed for the Championship, such as Leicester City attacking midfielder James Maddison, who ironically leaves the EPL following one his most productive league campaigns, in which he contributed to 19 goals in just 30 appearances. Maddison, according to Transfermarkt, is valued at €55 million (R1.1 billion) and is likely to be of interest to clubs still in the Premier League. Newcastle United have been rumoured to have previously been after the 26-year-old, as have Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. While Leicester will not want to lose the skilled and creative Maddison, the money he brings in from his potential transfer could help the Foxes in their bid to win immediate promotion.
Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse is another Three Lions international who has been relegated from England's top league this season, in which he, like Maddison, enjoyed impressive scoring form, particularly from direct free-kicks. The 28-year-old, in February, scored the 17th free-kick goal of his EPL career, one less than David Beckham's all-time record (18) in England. It is to be expected that teams in the Premier League will, at the very least, consider moving for the midfielder, who has only ever represented the Saints so far in his professional career.
Here are eight players, and their current Transfermarkt values, relegated from the Premier League top clubs could try to sign:
Two more Foxes players, Wilfred Ndidi and Harvey Barnes, both valued at €32 million (R676 million), are tipped to part ways with the club ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The Nigerian and the Englishman have been linked with big-money moves in England in the past, with Manchester United once said to have expressed serious interest in the former. Barnes, meanwhile, ends a disappointing club season after enjoying his best goalscoring form – 13 league goals in 34 matches. The 25-year-old has recently been linked with Spurs, where he could perhaps reunite and continue his professional and often efficient on-field relationship with the aforementioned Maddison.
Belgium international Youri Tielemans is the final Leicester player we have included in our eight-man list, with the midfielder still considered a promising talent due to his experience and age. The 26-year-old, capped 58 times for his country, will run his contract down at the King Power ahead of its expiration in June, leaving him available for top teams in the Premier League and around Europe to swoop up.
Southampton starlet Romeo Lavia, 19, is thought to have an incredibly bright future for himself, while Leeds United pair Tyler Adams and Wilfried Gnonto are also expected to be pursued by teams at a higher level.
