Copa America
Result: Venezuela 0-2 Argentina
Date: 28 June 2019
Venue: Maracana
Argentina set up a Copa America semi-final date with Brazil after defeating Venezuela 2-0 in the quarter-finals on Friday evening. Lionel Scaloni's troops scraped in to the quarter-finals after winning their last group encounter against Qatar last weekend. Sergio Aguero and Lautaro Martinez led the attack once again, with Lionel Messi playing behind the two forwards. Argentina signalled their intent from the onset as they found the breakthrough on 10 minutes as Martinez turned home from close range after Sergio Aguero's initial strike was saved. Despite the quick start by La Albiceleste, the majority of the first half proved to be a quiet affair, with both nations struggling to carve out clear-cut chances. With Venezuela struggling to make any in-roads in the final third, Luis Del Pino Mago made way for Yeferson Soteldo on 56 minutes. After a quiet spell in the half, the second goal eventually arrived in the 73rd minute as Farinez failed to hold on to Aguero's strike, which allowed Giovani Lo Celso to tap into an empty net. The latter stages of the half failed to provide a lot of entertainment as the encounter ended 2-0 to Argentina, who now face Brazil on Tuesday.
