Brazil were eliminated from the Copa America in the quarter-finals after losing to Uruguay on penalties.
The Brazilians were without talisman Vinicius Junior, who was serving a one-game suspension.
The first half proved to be a lively affair despite the fact that there were no goals to write home about, although Uruguay did suffer an early blow when defender Ronald Araujo was forced off with an injury.
The best chance of the first half fell to Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez, who headed over the crossbar from around six yards out.
Without the talismanic Vinicius, the Brazilians struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances at the Uruguay goal in the second period.
The chances continued to fall for the Uruguayans, with Maximiliano Araújo and Sebastián Cáceres unable to convert their chances midway through the second period.
Things did turn sour for Uruguay, who finished the game with ten men after Nahitan Nández's yellow card was upgraded to a red for a dangerous challenge on Rodrygo.
Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, the Uruguayans were able to take the game to a penalty shoot-out, where they held their nerve to triumph 4-2 after Eder Militao and Douglas Luiz failed to convert for Selecao.
