Copa America - Group B
Result: Uruguay 1-0 Jamaica
Date: 13 June 2015
Venue: Estadio Regional de Antofagasta
Cristian Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game to hand Uruguay a 1-0 win over Jamaica in their opening Copa America group B clash on Saturday evening.
The Uruguayans were without the services of FC Barcelona striker, Luis Suarez, who is serving a FIFA ban, for his bite Giorgio Cheillini at the 2014 World Cup.
In Suarez's absence, Paris-Saint Germain's Edison Cavani led the line for Uruguay, supported by the likes of Rodriguez and Nicolas Lodeiro.
The first chance of the game arrived in the 40th minute when Jamaican striker Mattocks, was presented with the ball in the box but he failed to make the proper connection.
The only goal of the game eventually arrived in the 52nd minute when Rodriguez calmly slotted into the far corner from six-yards out, after getting on the end of a knockdown.
The Jamaicans nearly hit back in the 60th minute but Giles Barnes's curling effort from distance sailed just wide of the upright.
Jamaica then went close in the space of three minutes, as Barnes headed over in the 76th minute, before Laing's header sailed narrowly wide of the post in the 79th minute.
Uruguay could have put the game beyond Jamaica in the 88th minute but defender Christian Stuani blazed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
Nonetheless, the Uruguayans held on and picked up the three points in their opening group game.
