Messi marked the occasion with a dazzling performance, scoring twice and assisting another goal, all within the first half of the match.
Six minutes into the tie, the Barcelona captain played a smart, chipped through-ball for Alejandro "Papu" Gomez, who volleyed the ball into the back of the net, before the Barca talisman converted from the penalty spot in the 33rd minute.
Then, three minutes before half-time, Messi lobbed the goalkeeper with a first-time finish after being played in behind the Bolivia defence by his new club colleague Sergio Aguero.
Messi and his teammates will now face Ecuador in the quarter-finals of the competition on 4 July, while the other last eight fixtures are: Uruguay vs Colombia, Brazil vs Chile, and Peru vs Paraguay.
