The first chance of the match fell to Derlis Gonzalez in the 29th minute, who was brilliantly picked out by his teammate Hernan Perez before he controlled the ball and fired a shot at goal from close range. Alisson was equal to the effort, but it was the first sign that Brazil were in for a tough encounter.
The rest of the first half at the Arena do Gremio was fairly uneventful, with neither side really managing to create great goalscoring chances, and the teams went into the break with the score at 0-0.
The Selecao looked more determined as they ran out for the second half, but were wasteful in Paraguay's final third. They were eventually rewarded for their efforts in the 54th minute, when Fabian Balbuena took out Roberto Firmino, who was clean through on goal.
After VAR was consulted, Balbuena was sent off, but the referee came to the conclusion that the foul on Firmino was outside the box. The free-kick was taken by Dani Alves, but Roberto Fernandez was there to stop the ball from hitting the back of the net.
The match ended goalless and was decided by a penalty shootout. Alisson saved the first effort from eight yards, giving Brazil the advantage. Willian, Marquinhos and Philippe Coutinho then converted their penalties, as did Paraguay's Miguel Almiron and Bruno Valdez.
Firmino missed, making it 3-3, but Paraguay's next penalty was dragged wide. With his country's fortunes in his hands, Gabriel Jesus scored the winning spot-kick, sending Brazil to the semi-finals of the Copa America.
