Result: Manchester United 3-0 Crystal Palace

Date: 26 September 2023

Venue: Old Trafford

Red Devils coach Erik ten Hag made a number of changes from the win over Burnley, as Mason Mount, Anthony Martial, Alejandro Garnacho and Raphael Varane were recalled while new signing Sofyan Amrabat made his first start.

The Red Devils dominated early but took the lead with the first big chance on 20 minutes when Pellestri and Garnacho combined to set up Garnacho, who sent a first-time finish from six yards out.

The lead was doubled for the home side in the 27th minute when midfielder Casemiro bagged his fourth goal of the campaign by nodding home a corner from Mount.

Palace, meanwhile, were second best all over the pitch in the first half as they failed to fashion any clear-cut openings whenever they did push forward, with United goalkeeper Andre Onana not being called upon at all.

Ten Hag did make one change at the start of the second half as Mount made way for Victor Lindelof, although the club did not confirm if it was an injury-related substitution.

The third goal arrived ten minutes into the second half when Casemiro turned provider to pick out Martial, who volleyed the cross into the far corner to open his scoring account for the season.

Onana was finally called into action in the 68th minute, with the Red Devils shot-stopper produced a good save to deny Jean-Philippe Mateta before Sam Johnstone pulled off a good save to keep out Jonny Evans' header at the other end.

Both sides did have chances to add to the scoreline in the final five minutes, with Lindelof and Garnacho both seeing the long-range efforts turned away by Johnstone in quick succession.

In the end, three goals were enough to see Ten Hag's charges through to the next round although they will meet Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
