The French publication has handed out the award since 1956, but worked together with FIFA for the past six years. However, the world football body ended its association with the award last month, and are likely to go back to their own version of the accolade, the FIFA World Player of the Year award.
The Ballon d'Or has often also been referred to as the award for the European Footballer of the Year, because all players plying their trade in Europe, whether born in Europe or not, are eligible to be nominated.
