Messi is widely regarded as the favourite to lift this year's accolade after steering FC Barcelona to five trophies.
Despite his eight-week injury absence in October and November, the Argentine was involved in more goals for club and country than the other two finalists.
Messi scored 52 goals and assisted a further 26 strikes, which means he had a hand in 78 goals in 2015.
Ronaldo leads the goals ranking with 57 strikes, but only assisted 17 for his teammates, while Neymar scored 45 and set up 17 goals as well.
Despite his young age, the 23-year-old Brazilian played the most games of the trio, with 63 appearances – Messi featured 61 times and Ronaldo 59.
It therefore comes as no surprise that the Portuguese had the best goals-per-game ratio with 0.97, while Messi follows with 0.85 and Neymar sits in third place with a goals average of 0.71.
