The Argentine claimed his fifth Golden Ball on Monday night, but stated he would immediately give them all back if it meant he could win the World Cup.
Messi and Argentina lost the 2014 final to Germany, and the 28-year-old was asked ahead of the gala in Zurich, Switzerland, if he would exchange his Ballons d'Or for a World Cup medal.
"What a question! But I'd have to say that I'd prefer to win the World Cup, that's the pinnacle," he answered at the pre-ceremony press conference.
After lifting his fifth Golden Ball, Messi also admitted it felt good to reclaim the award from his longstanding rival, Ronaldo.
"It's a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage winning again, after being there in the audience watching as Cristiano Ronaldo won for two years," he said, as quoted by Marca.
"It's incredible that it's my fifth. Much more than anything I would have dreamed of as a kid.
"I want to thank everyone who voted, and my teammates, for without them none of this would ever have been possible.
"I also want to thank football for everything it has brought me, both bad and good. It has made me grow and learn, always."
