The Argentine was full of praise for his teammate Neymar, insisting the Brazilian will dictate his own future.
"I think Neymar will one day win the Ballon d'Or because he has all the qualities required and because he's a top-class player," Messi told France Football.
"He'll be whatever he wants to be. Everything is open for him. He's quick, technical, excellent in one-on-ones -- he has everything."
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu rubbished claims that Messi could leave the Catalan giants.
"Yes, until he retires," Bartomeu added.
"After that, he can go wherever he wants. You know, we have contracts. And, above all, Leo is still young.
"I believe he still has some great years ahead of him. And us too, along with him. Because life with Leo is easier all the same."
Neymar has scored 19 goals and assisted a further 17 in all competitions this season and will be Barcelona's key man in their Copa del Rey tie with Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.
Both, Messi and Luis Suarez, have not been included in the squad for the quarter-final first leg.
