A former Ballon d'Or winner has backed Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to lift the prestigious award later this year.

Former Italy captain and Los Blancos defender Fabio Cannavaro feels the Portuguese star deserves the Ballon d'Or crown after winning the UEFA Champions League and the European Championship in 2015/16.
Ronaldo went on to score 51 goals in all competitions for Real last season and also got on the scoresheet at the Euros in France.
"Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d'Or, without a doubt," Cannavaro told Marca.
"Even if he hasn't scored these last few games, we shouldn't forget all he's done this year.
"Carlo Ancelotti used to say that, with Cristiano, it is like starting a match with a 1-0 edge."

The former Manchester United forward has been struggling to score of late, and has netted four goals in nine appearances so far this season.
