Top 10 Most Valuable African Players

Top 10 Most Valuable African Players

With rumours that Liverpool have placed a £100 million (R2.4 billion) price tag on Mohamed Salah, we took a look at the most valuable footballers from the African continent today.

The two-time CAF Men's Player of the Year is approaching the final year of his contract at Anfield, and Saudi Pro League sides still seem determined to make the winger the most expensive African footballer of all time. According to Transfermarkt, Salah is only the second-most valuable player from the continent at €65 million (R1.3 billion), but it appears teams from the oil-rich kingdom would be willing to pay way above market value to secure the services of the Premier League legend.

This is probably because the 31-year-old is still scoring at a world-class level, as is evidenced by his goals tally for the Reds this campaign. Salah has 19 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's side, and will likely add to that haul of goal contributions before the end of the season, when he will likely say goodbye to Merseyside.

Valued the same as the Egyptian speedster is a player from a fellow north African giant in Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan right-back is the highest-valued defender from the continent and is considered one of the best fullbacks in the world. Despite a lacklustre performance from the Atlas Lions at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the Paris Saint-Germain man still illustrated plenty of quality bombing up and down their right flank.

Here are the top 10 most valuable African footballers today, according to Transfermarkt:

Bryan Mbeumo
10. Bryan Mbeumo (Cameroon Brentford) - €38 million
Victor Boniface
9. Victor Boniface (Nigeria Bayer Leverkusen) - €40 million
Serhou Guirassy
8. Serhou Guirassy (Guinea Stuttgart) - €40 million
Ousmane Diomande
7. Ousmane Diomande (Ivory Coast Sporting CP) - €40 million
Andre Onana
6. Andre Onana (Cameroon Manchester United) - €40 million
Edmond Tapsoba
5. Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso Bayer Leverkusen) - €40 million
Mohammed Kudus
4. Mohammed Kudus (Ghana West Ham United) - €45 million
Achraf Hakimi
3. Achraf Hakimi (Morocco Paris Saint-Germain) - €65 million
Mohamed Salah
2. Mohamed Salah (Egypt Liverpool) - €65 million
Victor Osimhen
1. Victor Osimhen (Nigeria Napoli) - €110 million

Despite being a right-back, the Real Madrid academy graduate has shown how prolific he is when he approaches the final third. He has four goals and five assists in all competitions for Les Parisiens this season, but that is not to say he is a slouch on defence as he can hold his own against some of the best attackers in the world.

While the two aforementioned stars are from north Africa, the most valuable African footballer today is from west Africa and his name is Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian is coming off a miraculous 2023 that saw him break a number of Serie A goalscoring records before helping Napoli become champions of Italy for the first time in 33 years. He topped off the year by winning his first CAF Men's Player of the Year prize, becoming the first Nigerian to do so since Kanu in 1999.

He almost started his 2024 off in tremendous fashion as well, making it all the way to the Africa Cup of Nations final with the Super Eagles. Unfortunately, they were condemned to a 2-1 defeat by hosts Ivory Coast, but nevertheless, his value is now a hefty €110 million (R2.2 billion).
