Ghana and Chelsea legend Michael Essien has claimed that Liverpool's Mohamed Salah is not the greatest African footballer of all time and reveals who could be considered the best ever from the continent.
EPL Star Being Investigated For Football Betting
Liverpool's Egyptian talisman has been integral to the teams recent success, having broken all kinds of records since arriving at Anfield. The 30-year-old attacker has won multiple Premier League Golden Boots, CAF African Player of the Year awards, as well as every major club honour there is to win.
The forward is building a strong case for greatest African export to ply their trade in Europe but not according to former Chelsea stalwart Essien. The Ghanaian has lauded Salah for his exploits, but does not consider the former AS Roma man the best player the second largest continent in the world has produced.
"I think that Salah has become a world-class player, and I like that he always has a positive attitude," Essien told MBC Masr.
"Just look at his journey and how he left England and then returned years later. I am happy with everything he achieved so far.
"As long as he continues to perform on this level, it's not unusual that he has scored more goals than Drogba. I wish him all the best and I believe records are made to be broken.
"Africa has so many good players, I can't identify a single player because there were great players before Salah.
"But the greatest African player in my opinion is George Weah because he won everything and was the first African player to win the Ballon d'Or."
Liverpool 'Put Up For Sale' By Club Owners
Salah and Essien were teammates at Chelsea for only a day before the 2012 UEFA Champions League winning midfielder moved to AC Milan on 25 January 2014.
Today, Salah is a different player to the one that Essien may have met and while he did have a stuttering start to the season, the most prolific African the Premier League has ever seen seems to be regaining his form having scored in his last four games.
