Revealed: Why Ghana Fans Received R7.6k Each At AFCON

Revealed: Why Ghana Fans Received R7.6k Each At AFCON

A number of the Ghana fans who are in Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations are said to have received $400 (R7 617) each, with the reason for the payouts reportedly being revealed.

Ghana will look to bounce back from their shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cape Verde in their opening match of the tournament.

The result incensed many Ghanaian supporters who went to watch the match at the stadium, with one individual alleged to have been arrested for physically attacking the manager Christ Hughton at the team hotel after the game on Sunday.

This was later denied by the Ghana Football Federation (GFF), who insisted that the accused fan only verbally confronted the national team coach and was not arrested as he made no physical contact with Hughton.

The Black Stars supporters remained angry still, however, reports suggest that some were frustrated by something else instead.

According to Modern Ghana, passionate supporters expressed their disappointment at being neglected by Ghana officials after the game.

It is believed that over 400 supporters from the country were transported to the host nation in buses but since their arrival, they claimed that they were left stranded.

The fans threatened to expose the Ghana officials and boycott the tournament on Monday but Citi Eyewitness News now reports that each supporter was given $400 after tense negotiations between them and the organising officials

"There is good news. Yesterday after the story broke, around midnight, in fact most of us here went to sleep before the officials came and they came to call us and they gave us what we were due," a source told the publication.

Asked if all the supporters received $400, the source added: "I am not aware but what I do know from some of the dwellers [from other hotels] is that they also received $400 as those at the hotel [I am] received.

"For the entire tournament, in fact, officials were unable to tell us, so we don't know if this [$400] is going to be for the entire tournament."

Ghana face Egypt on Thursday night in the two sides' fifth meeting at AFCON.
