In February 2024, the decorated full-back was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a Barcelona nightclub on New Year's Eve of 2022. While he denied any wrongdoing, the ex-native was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.
In March 2024, however, he was released from prison after he submitted his appeal to the higher court, and now it has been revealed that it was successful, as the 126-capped ex-superstar will now be acquitted of all charges.
As per Sky Sports News, the court ruled on Friday that there was insufficient evidence to rule out Alves' presumption of innocence.
Speaking after the verdict, Alves' lawyer said that they were happy with the ruling and justice was served in the end.
"We are happy, he is innocent, justice has acted," said Irene Guardiola, Alves' lawyer.
"It has been very emotional, justice has been done."
"We expected this; it's fair," she added. "Alves is innocent; it's just been proven, and justice has finally been done. I'm thrilled. I believed it, and we're very happy."
When the multiple-time UEFA Champions League winner was arrested, he was winding down his career with UNAM Pumas in Mexico, but the Liga MX Apertura side terminated his deal shortly after he was apprehended.
