Benni McCarthy suffered his first defeat as coach of Kenya, who went down 2-1 to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Gabon on Sunday afternoon.
McCarthy's charges came into the calsh on he back of an entertaining 3-3 draw away to Gambia on Thursday, which was the coach's first game in charge.
The fans showed up in their numbers at the Nyayo Stadium after it was confirmed by the Kenyan Football Federation that all the tickets were sold out for the qualifier.
However, the Harambee Stars did not get off to the perfect start when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for the visitors in the 16th minute, taking his tally to three goals in four qualifiers.
McCarthy's side showed great perseverance to fight back a few days ago, but they were unable to claw back the deficit before the halftime break while they conceded a second goal seven minutes after the break, with Aubameyang completing his brace from the penalty spot.
The hosts did pull one back just after the hour mark as Michael Olunga made it two goals in two games to set up a big finish in the final 30 minutes.
However, there would be no late comeback this time around as Gabon held on to claim maximum points on the road and strengthened their grip at the top of Group F.
Kenya, meanwhile, remain unchanged in fourth position with six points to their name after five matches played.
