In 2024, Nigeria's Ademola Lookman was named Africa's best player following his exploits for the Super Eagles and Atalanta.
At the start of the year, he helped the West African giants reach the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, and by the end of the 2023/24 campaign, he helped La Dea win their first-ever continental title by scoring a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final.
This form saw him attract a lot of interest in his services, but he decided to start the new season in Bergamo, and he has begun the campaign in fine form. Twenty-eight games into the 2024/25 campaign, the London-born attacker has scored 15 goals and provided seven assists.
However, while he put on a historic display during Atalanta's Europa League-winning triumph, the 27-year-old has not enjoyed the same continental success this season. The Serie A outfit was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League earlier this week, and during the encounter, while he was able to find the back of the net, he also missed a penalty kick.
After the loss to Club Brugge, Lookman's manager Gian Piero Gasperini labelled the Nigerian as one of the worst penalty takers he has ever seen in his life, adding that one of their designated penalty takers, Charles De Ketelaere or Mateo Retegui, was supposed to take it.
The winger released a statement after the Italian tactician's comments, claiming that one of the aforementioned duo insisted that he take the spot-kick, but he also expressed sadness at Gasperini's remarks.
