Diogo Jota was recalled to the Reds line-up in place of Luis Diaz while Marcus Rashford and Marcos Asensio earned their first starts for Villa since joining in January.
Rashford looked to make an impact early on as he combined Asensio in the box before crossing to the box, where Virgil van Dijk deflected into his own net but the goal was ruled out for an offside.
The Reds carved out a big chance after 25 minutes when Andrew Robertson was given and time space to pick out Mohamed Salah in the box, but the Egyptian sent his header over the crossbar from six yards out.
Salah made up for the error three minutes later as Diogo Jota intercepted a pass from Andres Garcia before teeing up the Egyptian, who slammed home his 24th league goal of the season.
The home side did get back on level terms in the 38th minute as Youri Tielemans volleyed home at the far post after Liverpool were unable to clear a free-kick in their own box.
However, Villa completed the turnaround before the halftime break as Ollie Watkins got ahead of his marker to head home his 12th league goal from Lucas Digne's inviting cross.
The Reds came out firing in the second half and bagged their equaliser as Salah turned provider to tee up Trent Alexander-Arnold, who saw his low strike deflect off Tyrone Mings and sail into the back of the net.
Reds coach Arne Slot threw on Darwin Nunez soon after and they should have been in the lead just before the 70 minute mark but the Uruguayan blazed over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy.
Both sides had chances to get the winning goal but neither were able to hit the target, as the two sides settled for a share of the spoils in the end.
