Manchester City are reportedly ready to spend massively at the end of the season in an effort to recruit a Kevin De Bruyne replacement.
The Sky Blues will continue their squad rebuilding once the 2024/25 campaign reaches its conclusion. During this past window, the reigning Premier League champions recruited heavily as the squad welcomed players such as Nico González, Omar Marmoush, Vítor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov.
However, it seems that City have identified the midfield as an area of the squad that needs rejuvenation. De Bruyne's minutes have been managed this season, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, the English giants are not resting on their laurels in their search for the Belgian playmaker's replacement.
According to the Daily Mail, the Mancunians view German international Florian Wirtz as an ideal successor to one of the club's all-time greats.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been in mercurial form this season for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 15 goals and providing 12 assists in the 35 appearances he has made in all competitions.
His contract at the BayArena expires in two years, and it is alleged that City want to pounce with a €102 million (R1.9 billion) bid for the 29-capped international. City will, however, not be Wirtz's only suitors, as Bayern Munich have been vocal about their appreciation for the Pulheim native.
The Bavarian giants are said to be eager to replicate the tandem of Wirtz and Jamal Musiala at the Allianz Arena, especially after recently tying down the Chelsea academy graduate to a new long-term contract.
