Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that the legendary Scottish tactician believes former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri would be suitable for the role.
The 57-year-old is said to be Ferguson's ideal candidate to replace Ten Hag should the 20-time English champions look to part ways with the Dutchman.
Ten Hag has come under serious pressure at Old Trafford amid United's poor start to the 2024/25 campaign, in which they have so far won just three matches.
The most recent wave of criticism the former Ajax Amsterdam coach has been hit with came following the Red Devils' humiliating 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.
Rumours since that game have suggested some players in the dressing room expect Ten Hag to be sacked, with more difficult fixtures on the horizon for United.
Allegri, meanwhile, is currently out of a job after his departure from Juventus following a fallout with the club's sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli.
