One of France's greatest goalscorers has decided to retire from international football, just over a year after losing out on the captaincy to Kylian Mbappe.

Atletico Madrid talisman Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football at 33 years old.
In a post on social media, the attacking midfielder wrote: "It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life. Thank you for this magnificent tricolor adventure and see you soon."

Griezmann retires as France's joint-third record appearance-maker, having represented Les Bleus on 137 occasions since his debut in 2014.
With 44 goals, he bows out as the country's fourth best goalscorer in history, behind Kylian Mbappe (44), Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (57).
Despite his importance for the French national team over the past decade, Griezmann had been having a difficult run of form internationally since 2021.

The Atletico star failed to net at both the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 UEFA European Championship, with his last goal coming in a friendly against Germany in 2023.
