According to The Guardian, the Super Eagles are closing in on the appointment of German coach Winfried Schafer, who won the 2002 AFCON while in charge of Cameroon.
While there was confusion surrounding the future of Augustine Eguavoen, who recently said he is still in charge of the team, it appears Schafer will assume the role.
The experienced tactician is expected to arrive in Nigeria soon for his official unveiling following successful talks after he emerged as the nation's top candidate.
Herve Renard was reportedly also considered for the job, that was expected to be held by Bruno Labbadia, whose appointment did not materialise despite an official announcement.
Eguavoen, meanwhile, was in charge of Nigeria's two 2025 AFCON qualifiers earlier this month against Benin and Rwanda.
