Tau was a no-show in Al Ahly's 2-1 win over ZED on Sunday evening.
The club's Swiss coach Marcel Kohler stated that an injury was the reason behind the 30-year-old's absence from the team.
However, it appears that something bigger is brewing behind the scenes at the Egyptian club as reports suggest that Tau has handed in a request to the club to pay him the full amount of his outstanding contract for the year, on condition that he leaves the club.
It is understood that Tau's relationship with Kohler has significantly deteriorated over the last few months, with both club and player looking to severe ties.
However Tau does still have one year left on his contract with the club, which is proving to be a stumbling block at this stage.
According to Elbaladsport, Tau is said to have requested full payment of $1.1 million (±R18 million) for the year; however, the club are reported to view this amount as too steep and have suggested that Tau reduce this number by half or that he would be at liberty to leave the club, although it would be on a free.
Tau recently celebrated his tenth trophy with Al Ahly as they lifted the Egyptian league title.
