Sundowns Sink Saudi Champs In Final Tour Clash

Sundowns Sink Saudi Champs In Final Tour Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns ended their tour of Austria with a 2-1 win over Saudi Pro League champions Al Hilal on Friday evening.

The Brazilians were competing in their second friendly of the day, having defeated Qatari outfit Al Arabi 3-0 on Friday morning.

As expected, Sundowns rang the changes for the second friendly and had a number of the regulars back in the side, including new signing Arthur Sales while the Saudi Arabian champions had striker Aleksander Mitrovic in the attack as superstar Neymar remained out.

Al Hilal enjoyed a lot of possession in the early stages of the encounter and passed up a good chance in the opening ten minutes when Mitrovic headed wide from close range.

The dominance continued as Sundowns were only threatening on the counter, while goalkeeper Tshabalala was called upon to make a superb finger-tip save just before the water-break.

After a flurry of changes for the final ten minutes of the stanza, Sundowns should have been ahead on the stroke of halftime when Divine Lunga picked out Peter Shalulile, who failed to convert from six yards.

Minutes after the restart, Al Hilal were awarded a penalty for an apparent handball in the box. Mitrovic stepped up but saw his spot-kick saved by veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

The Saudi side were made to rue that miss a minute later when Lucas Costa Riberio surged forward at the other end and sent a superb strike into the top corner from distance.

However, the Saudi champions were awarded another dubious penalty for an apparent foul in the box. Mitrovic stepped up once again but this time, the Serbian striker slotted into the bottom corner.

Sundown restored their lead in the 63td minute when Aubrey Modiba slotted home from close range after Peter Shalulile's initial strike was saved by the Al-Hilal shot-stopper.
