With Benni McCarthy among the coaches linked with Kaizer Chiefs for the club's head coaching role, there have been growing calls for the Manchester United man to be considered for the Amakhosi move too.
Chiefs have completed their worst-ever season in the club's history after finishing in a disappointing 10th place on the log under interim coach Cavin Johnson who had taken over the reins from Molefi Ntseki earlier in the season.
While Pitso Mosimane remains one of the coaches linked with the Soweto giants along with several others in the likes of Nasreddine Nabi and Alexandre Santos, among others, McCarthy has had his name added into the mix in recent weeks after he didn't deny interest in the job in a recent interview with Marawa Sports Worldwide.
Furthermore, McCarthy will see his contract at United expire at the end of the month and indications are that he is likely to leave Old Trafford after the club reportedly decided against extending the deal after his two-year spell.
The Good
"I have said this before and I am saying it again, Chiefs need somebody with a pedigree as their next coach as there is a lot that needs to be done to get things right for the club. He's got to be a coach with a good track record in terms of winning and a reputation with forming good relationships with the players. He doesn't have to be someone who will come and try to bully the players as that will not work. Chiefs need someone who will stamp his authority and be a leader in managing the group. I do believe that Benni does possess those qualities, and for me, he can be a good candidate for the job," said Mlwane.
The Bad
"A lot has been said about Chiefs' players and like most people say, they might not all be that good, but they need a good coach to improve them. They need someone who they can believe in and someone who they will want to play for to improve. Let me make an example about Sundowns and their players, some of the players there were not signed while on the same level they are now at in terms of their game, but they were coached and allowed to improve. They were made to believe in themselves. It is always important for a coach to be able to work with what he's got in terms of the players and be able to help them to improve. Chiefs' players need a coach who will be able to instil a winning mentality on them, because the way I see it that's where they are lacking the most, they don't have the winning mentality," he added.
The Ugly
On Chiefs' 10th place finish
"For me, that's a bad thing. For a club like Chiefs and as big as they are, to finish in such a low position is very bad. Even if you say you are building or working on something, it should show with the team's performances that you are trying. The players should have confidence and it must show in their performances that they are trying to achieve something. With the club guaranteed that it won't participate in the top eight, that already means that they are limited on the chances of winning a trophy next season, which isn't a good thing, because there is a competition they won't be competing in. Despite the bad season that the team has had, I expected them to at least finish in the top eight and it is really bad that they were unsuccessful in achieving that," concluded Mlwane.
