There were a few flash points throughout the game, which was no surprise considering the history between the two in this campaign.
"It's the worst game of football I've ever been involved in, from a lot of aspects but at the same time I've got to congratulate this group of players, they were unbelievable, they just refuse to lose," Mokwena said on SuperSport.
"So proud of the Sundowns players, proud of the Sundowns family, we fought very hard, I'm very proud of them."
Mokwena continued to praise Sundowns' resilience as they kept pushing for the equaliser late in the second half.
"(Aubrey) Modiba doing so well, we lost it a little bit, you could see we were struggling for legs but we needed the right mentality and the mentality came right at the end you know, so I'm very proud of them, proud of the mentality and the effort of the players.
"I'm proud of the boys for their fighting spirit, they were incredible, very proud of them," he added.
