The story
Karabo Poppy recently collaborated with the Spanish football league, LaLiga, and video game developers EA Sports, to create a series of striking artworks, which were revealed during the launch event of the FC Futures grassroots development platform.
The newly renovated Glen Country Club community pitch, designed by Poppy, is part of EA Sports and LaLiga's commitment to provide access to football globally and grow the game for all.
As stated in a press release shared on LaLiga's website, the pitch was transformed in design with the aim of providing a fun space for the community to enjoy the beautiful game.
"The design elements are made up of historical and cultural elements of South Africa, capturing the country's exuberant spirit. With its rich history, football culture in South Africa is deeply ingrained and reflects the nation's diversity and resilience," reveals the statement.
It also mentions that EA Sports FC and LaLiga share a common goal to continue growing football from the ground up, and this project in Cape Town is another example of their commitment after recently launching refurbished pitches in Spain's Malaga and Singapore.
Tresor Penku, LaLiga's Managing Director for Africa, stated: "This partnership between EA Sports and LaLiga symbolises our collective commitment to nurturing the next generation of football talent in South Africa.
"Together, with the launch of FC FUTURES, we embark on a journey to empower youth and elevate the beautiful game to new heights."
"This project is particularly meaningful to me as it represents one of my largest mural installations to date. Each design element incorporates historical and cultural motifs of South Africa, celebrating the country's diversity and resilience," said Poppy, in a quote published by City Press.

"The renovation of this space has been possible thanks to the FIVES Futbol, which has shown support in this social, educational and sports project of EA SPORTS FC and LaLiga," concluded the statement shared by LaLiga's website.
