One day was all it took after achieving bronze at the AFCON in Ivory Coast for Broos to decide he did not want to continue as Bafana Bafana's coach.
The 71-year-old dropped a bombshell in recent times that he had actually informed SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan that he wants to leave his post after Bafana beat DR Congo in the third/ fourth place playoff.
Broos cited constant criticism, being away from his grandchildren and a lack of support from the Premier Soccer League for his decision, which to this day was not accepted by Jordaan.
"I had a conversation with the Chairman. On Saturday we played the third-place match and the Sunday we were in the hotel, and I made an appointment with the Chairman and I told him I want to stop [the national team]," he told Nieuwsblad's Frank and Franky Podcast, as translated from Flemish to English by YouTube.
"It was a good thing that he was sitting down, otherwise he would have fallen over backwards.
"I said first and foremost what I made through in the last two and a half years of criticism and I don't want to experience that anymore. I know everything is good now – but in March we have World Cup qualifiers and if we don't do well, it will start again and it will be worse.
"Also I am alone, my family is in Belgium and I am not going to do that anymore where I am away for two and a half months – it is a lot, especially when you have grandchildren and then it gets even worse.
"And the opposing of the league to the national team. In May last year we were preparing for AFCON and there were a few friendly matches and we had two World Cup qualifiers in November, and everyone agreed that the PSL has to stop around Christmas, and the players would have five to six days to recover and then in the new year preparation would start.
"We wrote a letter to the PSL asking for this to happen and there was no response. The calendar came out and the first thing I see is that they are stopping on the 31st December.
"In November the players played two qualifiers and when they came for the first training they were physically exhausted because there were several players at Sundowns who played in the AFL, CAF Champions League and Cup games, so they were completely exhausted," he continued.
Broos is still the South Africa head coach and it remains to be seen if the reported long-standing issues he had with the PSL can be resolved going forward so that the Belgian's future could be secure in the hot seat.
Soccer Laduma reached out to SAFA for a comment but the association has not responded yet.
