The Amsterdam District Court has ruled that Netherlands international Quincy Promes was complicit in smuggling more than 1 000kg of cocaine in Europe, with authorities consequently condemning him to a six-year imprisonment.
The 32-year-old currently plies his trade in the Russian Premier League for Spartak Moscow, and was not present for his trial as he is not expected to return to his native Netherlands any time soon. He also pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors had originally asked for the forward to be sentenced to nine years for his role in bringing what is believed to be 1 360kg of cocaine into the city of Antwerp in 2020.
This was also the same year Promes is said to have stabbed a cousin of his in the knee, an assault for which he was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
In a written verdict from the court, as per ESPN, the Dutch authorities alluded to the former Ajax Amsterdam and Sevilla forward getting into the trade to increase his prominence in the criminal side of society on top of having millions of fans.

"This makes it even more objectionable that the suspect tries to increase his wealth [and possibly also prestige in certain circles] through involvement in large international drug transports," the court said.
