According to Sport journalist Sergi Capdevila, the Catalan club is paying close attention to the 36-year-old's situation in the United States ahead of their MLS run-in.
Should the Herons fail to reach the play-offs this season, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner could be out of action until February.
The report claims this could lead to the Blaugrana making a move to bring their former No. 10 back to the club on a short-term deal, similar to how David Beckham joined AC Milan on loan from LA Galaxy in 2009 and again in 2010.
It is said that no talks have taken place between Messi's camp and Barcelona, but that the possibility is being contemplated.
The Argentine has taken football in America by storm since his arrival earlier this year, a move he decided to make instead of waiting for a formal contract offer from his boyhood side in Spain.
