Downs Using Euro Contract System To Keep Defender?

Downs Using Euro Contract System To Keep Defender?

Mamelodi Sundowns are keen to keep the core of their squad together, and the Siya crew understands they will be looking to extend the contracts of dependable players earlier than usual.

Siya sources have indicated that the club may have already started negotiating a contract extension for defender Mothobi Mvala with two years remaining on his existing deal.

The source added that the club is introducing a European way of dealing with player contracts where they don't wait until it's too late.

"The system of negotiation for contracts and the extension of contracts at the club have now changed. The Sporting Director has introduced the European system where even when there are still two or three years remaining they can negotiate for a new contract," said the Siya source.

"That's what they are doing with Mvala. They have tabled a new three-year offer for him. It's on the table. I can't say they have agreed but it's an offer open for discussion," the source told the Siya crew.

A different Siya source added that the club should want to keep all their experienced players and Mvala is one of those players.

"They are making sure they keep all the players that add value to the team. They don't want to take chances regarding contracts and mainly with Mvala," said the other Siya source.

"That's why they have already offered him a new three-year contract. It's subject to negotiations and that's why they have started it early to make sure they keep him," the source told the Siya crew.

Mvala had joined Sundowns in 2020 from Highlands Park together with striker Peter Shalulile and he signed an initial five-year contract which expires in June 2025. He has been an important part of the club since joining them and has also become a regular for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for a comment but no response was received while preparing this story.
