African Football League Prize Money 'Revealed'

The prize money for CAF's new competition, the African Football League (AFL), has now reportedly been revealed.

October is approaching, which means the world will bear witness to what was originally referred to as the African Super League for the very first time. With the name having officially been changed since, more official information has been coming to light.

The competition will commence on 20 October and run until 11 November, with eight of the historically most successful clubs from across the continent set to take part in its first iteration.

While the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns, African champions Al Ahly and Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club have been confirmed as some of the teams who will duke it out in the tournament, what remains unofficial are the figures involved for all sides participating.

According to Yalla Korra, however, each club taking part in the AFL will receive $700 000 (R13.4 million).

The same report states that those who successfully win their quarter-final clashes will rake in $800 000 (R15.3 million), while the losing finalists will receive $500 000 (R9.5 million), and the winner will take home $1 million (R19.1 million).

It is further claimed that FIFA will be heavily involved in helping co-ordinate the competition and have enlisted the services of an Italian sports marketing agency headquartered in Rwanda to handle all administrative matters pertaining to the first-ever AFL.

The money being reported falls well short of the $100 million (R1.9 billion) promised by CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe when he officially announced the competition, but given that next year's edition is expected to include the 24 sides initially touted, perhaps that fiscal aspect will follow suit.
