Authorities in Panama confirmed on Monday that 26-year-old Panama international Gilberto Hernandez was killed by gunmen in the Caribbean city of Colon.
The centre-back appeared twice for his country in March this year, against Guatemala and Lionel Messi's Argentina.
Hernandez played for Club Atletico Independiente, whom he made 35 appearances for after joining the club last year.
Police said that a suspect has been arrested in "connection with the shooting" in Colon following "a series of operations and search procedures".
The Panamanian Football Federation issued a tribute to the player in a statement on Monday.
"FEPAFUT extends its condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as to the entire CAI and Panamanian soccer family," it read, according to France24.
"Peace to his soul."
