The 36-year-old made his debut for Inter Miami in the early hours of Saturday morning, coming off the bench to score the winner in his team's 2-1 win over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.
Messi was immediately handed the captain's armband as he entered the field of play in Miami, something fans will now see more of at the Herons.
Speaking on Monday, manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino, when asked whether the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner would be leading the team going forward, confirmed Messi would be taking on the captain's role.
"The other day he was (captain) too, when he entered," he said, according to Reuters.
"Yes, he will be."
A win on Wednesday will see Inter Miami advance to the knockout round of the Leagues Cup.
