In a surprising turn of events, Soccer Laduma has been led to believe that Kaizer Chiefs could revisit their interest in Bongani Zungu. But it would take something sensational to lure the Bafana Bafana international away from Mamelodi Sundowns having rejoined the DStv Premiership champions on a three-year contract with an option to renew in August 2022.
The Duduza-born star was returning from a spell in France after becoming a free agent when his time with Amiens SC ended. The Soweto giants were always in the picture, although at some point, they gave up their pursuit of the midfielder due to not being able to meet his personal demands even though he was unattached.
Downs then pounced, the Siya crew reporting then that coach Rhulani Mokwena had been crucial in getting Zungu to agree to move back to Chloorkop, a club he played for prior to moving to Portugal in 2016.
Soccer Laduma has it on good authority that Amakhosi sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr met with the player a few times last year to try sign him, but a possible move never materialised. It will come a shock, but Siya sources have indicated that Chiefs would still love to bring Zungu to Naturena, although at this stage, this is a move that seems near impossible considering how much Downs value the player.
The transfer window only shuts on August 31 and this could be a developing story worth keeping an eye on over the coming days.
Is Zungu better off at Chiefs than Sundowns?
