On the weekend, the Red Devils announced that they were still in talks with goalkeeper David de Gea over a new deal after reports in England suggested they had withdrawn their latest contract offer, which the Spaniard believed he had already accepted. The 32-year-old shot-stopper, whose latest deal expired at the end of June, is now officially unattached, but this does not necessarily mean his chapter in Manchester is closed. It is understood that De Gea wants to continue at Old Trafford, although there are rumours claiming he is being pursued by a club in the Saudi Pro League.
While many United supporters feel it is time for the 45-time Spain international to move on, it seems there is a disappointment at how his situation in England has been handled given his many years of service. De Gea has amassed 545 appearances for the 20-time English champions and has won the club's Players' Player of the Year award on four occasions since his debut.
Here are eight stars who are now officially considered free agents after their deals expired last month:
Staying in England, Brazil international Roberto Firmino has seen his deal at Liverpool officially expire after eight years of outstanding service. The 31-year-old is expected to join Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, a side formerly coached by South African tactician Pitso Mosimane, while Crystal Palace legend Wilfried Zaha finds himself in a similar situation, although he is yet to decide his future. Jesse Lingard has been spotted training at Inter Miami's grounds in the United States after confirming his departure from Nottingham Forest, while 14-time UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid officially no longer employ Marco Asensio and Eden Hazard.

While Asensio is said to have already agreed a contract with Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, it remains to be seen where Hazard plays his football next season, or if he plays football at all. Rumours recently suggested that the 32-year-old could consider retiring from the game following his dreadful four-year spell at Los Blancos, during which he scored just seven goals in 76 appearances.
In Italy, meanwhile, Angel Di Maria has left Juventus and is expected to return to Benfica as a free agent, and Milan Skriniar has parted ways with Inter Milan ahead of a free transfer to PSG.
