The Bafana Bafana international maintained his spot in the Red Devils line-up as he led the attack that also included Kahraba and Mohamed Hany following last week's Super Cup win over Pyramids.
The Egyptian giants won the last two encounters against Esperance, which included a 1-0 win in Rades when Pitso Mosimane was still in charge of the club two years ago.
The visitors got off to the perfect start as Tau opened the scoring with a close-range finish after being set up by Kahraba in the eighth minute of the contest.
That goal took Tau's tally to three goals in the competition this season, while he also scored in the semi-finals for the second season running after his brace against ES Setif last year.
Al Ahly looked livelier than their Tunisian counterparts and had a couple more efforts at goal, with Mohamed Ben Romdhane amd Kahraba going close to adding to score with strikes from distance that goalkeeper Mohamed Debchi.
Esperance responded with a change at halftime, with Sabir Bougrine making way for Anice Badri, who has scored eight goals in the Tunisian top-flight this season.
Things got better for the ten-time champions after the halftime break as Tau completed his brace with another close-range finish into the top corner ten minutes into the second stanza.
While Esperance were unable to find a way past the Al Ahly defence, the Egyptians were able to bag a third goal with 15 minutes to go as Kahraba got his name on the score-sheet with a neat finish to wrap up the first-leg contest.
